Learning the Game

Your golf game is a challenge and you must be desire change and believe it is possible before you ever begin. Therefore, Al Owens and Alcero Golf is not interested in burdening you with too much information or infecting your golf game with paralysis by analysis. However, he is interested in instructing you in a manner that allows you to absorb the greatest amount of learning to sprout the most enjoyment from your golf game. Since you are interested in improving and getting more satisfaction, it is Alcero Golf's responsibility to respect your desires and to provide you with a premium gof instruction experience.
The following comments allow you to see how the creative process can begin for you to bring you to better levels of your game that you have always desired.
Be Realistic With Yourself
Most amateur golfers set unrealistic expectaions. If you do not have the time and energy to spend eight hours a day on the range and practice green, you will not play golf as well as a tour player. Golfers on the PGA, Senior PGA and LPGA Tours earn their living playing golf. They are talented and determined and devote great amounts of time and energy towards focused practice.
Prior to beginnig your quest for change and creating the game you desire, it is important that you make an honest assesment of where golf fits into your lifestyle. If you wish to become a competitive amateur player, you must be prepared to put in the hours of practice necessary to attain that goal. If you are comfortable being a weekend wedge-warrior with little or no practice sessions, your goal should be to enjoy the game at your present level of play. Most amateur players will fall somewhere between these two extremes. Be honest with yourself. Golf is considerably more fun if you set realistic expectaions.
Understanding The Teaching Process
Your golf swing is probably a lot better than you realize. Rebuilding golf swings is very rare, instead Al Owens will look to fine-tune your swing. Whether you need a complete overhaul or some minor adjustments, keep in mind that it takes plenty of practice to blend the changes into your muscle memory. There are expectations, but generally, you will not become noticeably better overnight. As a matter of fact, there is usually a little regression before progression. Your body and mind are comfortable with what is familier with and, whether you ralize it or not, it will initially fight the change.

To properly learn the game of golf and to accept new ideas, it is imperative to realize the following:
- Learning must take place over a sustained period of time.
- There must be a good relationship and trust between you and your instructor.
- As much energy should be focused on the positive elements of your swing as are spent fixing your swing flaws.
- The educational environment must be enthusiastic and encourage learning.

Sporadic golf lessons with the neighborhood teaching pro, while well intentioned, rarely produce optimum results because it is less likely to maintain all of these abouve advantages. Begin the process with a
PLAN.
In addition, many golf instructors view a golf lesson as a faultfinding treasure hunt. By so doing, they will typically present you with some "Band-Aid" cures that may work for a limited period of time but eventually fail or, even worse, create additional problems.
Al believes that his overall knowledge of the game is unparalled and that his proven approach to teaching golf is unique and effective. The only variable is YOU. If you are willing to to decicate your energy and commit to becoming a better player, he will apply his abilities and methods to help you arrive at your desired destination!
Be Willing To Change
Everyone learns at a different rate. Each of us has a different pattern of learning. Aside from how you learn, golf has a different priority to you than it may have to either your spouse or your friends. As a result, there are no set time-frames for improvement.
One thing you can be sure of. If you are willing to accept the instruction given and will make a focused effort to practice properly what is required to improve on and off the course, you WILL get better. As your swing improves, you must be willing to put in required amount of practice as well as tolerate a few predictable ups and downs. For many golfers, if they make a swing change and do not notice immediate improvement, they quickly abandon the swing changes and revert back to their old swings. An opportunity for improvement has been lost.
When initially practicing the fundamentals, mechanical, mental and visual methods or elements of a swing change, many believe they are doing it wrong. This belief sends a negative energy toward your improvement process and thus negative results follow. Also, this is because they may not get immediate results. They may be pracicing the proper correction or technique but it takes time before the rest of the body, mind and spirit can incorporate a swing change into your overall golf game. As noted early, you may take a step back before you take a step forward.

Don't Expect Miracles
A well-executed golf swing is a motor skill, and it takes time to become reflexive. If you were to begin taking piano lessons, would you expect to play the concertos of Beethoven or Mozart within a day? A week? A month? A year? Have you ever learned to skate or ski? If you have, you know that there is a significant learning curve involved in becoming proficient in either sport. However, you eventually get to a point where every motion involved becomes automatic to you.
The ability to understand what is covered in a lesson takes intellegence. Transferring this intelligence into a motor skill takes proper practice, repetition and time. There are no shorcuts to a successful golf swing. A fundamentally sound golf swing must be earned. A major change to your swing could likely take months before it feels comfortable to you.
Don't Put Unnecessary Pressure On Yourself
At the beginning of golf instruction, you may be asked to hit some golf shots or take some practice swings by an instructor. Based upon previous lessons instructors have seen, you will likely try so hard to swing perfectly that you end up spraying balls all over the range. This often leads to unnecessary embarassment and frustration. Please keep in mind that there is no requirement to impress instructors with your ball striking skills.
If you had a perfect golf swing, you would not be seeking golf instruction. As a golf instructor Al Owens has seen a great many golf swings that are better than the one currently in your possession, and, as well some worse ones. If you are nervous and tense it will distract from your ability to get the most from your golf instruction experience. Relax and have fun...enjoy the lesson and the game!
Communication Is An Absolute Must
Your progress in your golf swing will depend largely on your ability to share your thoughts, ideas, feelings and concepts with any instructor you work with. Ask plenty of questions. If you disagree with something that someone is teaching you, let them know. All instructors should welcome any discussion you may have concerning any are of the golf game. There is no such thing as a dumb question as Im sure you have heard. If you are unclear on a particular point, please say so. Your feedback is critical to your success of your swing. You can not absorb what you do not understand.
